Bonding over Beer in Sydney

Looking for a way to bond with fellow travelers in Sydney? Enter a beer-drinking contest!

While studying abroad with my graduate school, we joined Jackson on George’s (176 George St, Sydney NSW 2000, Australia) Beer Hall of Fame. This bar boasted 100 beers from 27 different countries, and the prize for finishing was a plaque on the wall and a t-shirt. What better incentive for a group of MBA students?

25 of us entered the contest and it only took two and a half hours to down all the beers necessary to earn that coveted spot on the wall. Individuals are allowed to enter the contest as well and have as many months or years to complete the challenge as necessary.

The beers weren’t all good either, and there were a few laugh worthy brews on the list like Miller Chill and Budweiser, but I had a blast sampling beers I had never heard of regardless if they were terrible. The official beer of China (Yanjing) turned out to be disgusting but I was too busy socializing to notice.

Memories may last forever, but I’m officially a part of history at Jackson on George’s.

Have you done any similar beer drinking contests around the world? Let me know!

  1. It doesn't count if you're competing against yourself, right?
